Ramin Djawadi has woven his scores for HBO’s hit Game of Thrones fantasy series into one of TV's grandest musical tapestries, translating such ideas as “honor” and “conspiracy” into recurring musical motifs, while pondering: What is the sound of dragon eggs hatching? But hold the Celtic influences, please. “As soon as it goes into that—I don’t want to say cliché—but that folky sound, the producers and I always said, 'Let’s not get too far down that road,'” Djawadi confides. His sensibilities were molded by a boyhood love of Elmer Bernstein’s landmark Magnificent Seven score. The composer says he treats each season as “a 10-hour movie,” a musical gambit that lets familiar themes continually interact and evolve. Season Four’s most striking musical redux is Sigur Rós’ haunting rendition of the recurring song “The Rains of Castamere,” with lyrics by series creator George R.R. Martin. (It was previously performed by The National during Season Two.)
