The Midnight Rock label, run by Jah Thomas, boasted one of the most successful and widely imitated sounds of the early dancehall era. If the crystalline vocal harmonies of the mid-‘70s were tightly arranged studio creations, Thomas’ loose-limbed rub-a-dub excursions were designed to re-create the experience of a street-corner dance, with chatty DJs and keening singers trading improvised verses as the selector played version after version of a single pummeling rhythm late into the night. Clearly, the extended runtime of the 12” single made it the ideal format for this type of music. The Greensleeves imprint has done listeners a remarkable service by collecting extended disco mixes of 11 of Jah Thomas’ hardest productions for the Midnight Rock label. The set includes massive hits like Tristan Palmer’s herbsman anthem “Joker Smoker” and Anthony Thomas’ anti-violence lament “Gunshot," plus more obscure cuts like Peter Metro and Zu’s percussion-heavy chat “Calypso Calypso."
