A spinoff of the Chicago Celtic-punk group Flatfoot 56, 6’10 gives vocalist Tobin Bawinkel a vehicle to explore Americana sounds with a lineup of assorted musical comrades. The Humble Beginnings of a Rovin’ Soul brims with rootsy vigor and natural camaraderie, framing Bawinkel’s hearty Joe Strummer–like vocals with galvanizing acoustic guitars, mandolins, and accordion. A rugged blue-collar spirit animates “Da Boss” and “It Is Well,” while “Timothy” and “Backpack” touch on Christian themes without preachiness. Bawinkel brings an easy gravitas to his performances, which can’t help but raise a smile and set feet a-tappin'.
