Details
[Edit]A limited fan-club compilation released between the Gorgeous and Don Solaris records, Statetostate isn't a cache of undiscovered career highs, but it is a periodically worthwhile one-stop shop for 808 State's few exclusives. Many of these songs are taken from the Gorgeous sessions, the best being the Orbital-in-1992 cleanness of "Fear," and even the assorted sub-flip material cleverly emphasizes the steady decline the band suffered through after its 90 and Ex:El high tide. Take "Control," an early version of 1993's Joy Division-sampling "Contrique" but recorded back during the Quadrastate sessions, which is less obvious and more lumpish and isolated than what finally got released to the public. While it and quite a number of the other songs may seem inessential to the average fan, those still curious about 808 State's live potency would be well-served by highlights like the Tokyo clip of "Cubik" — evil, acid energy unlike any of the band's pre-rave peers.
