From his humble beginnings making dorm-room beats on Fruity Loops, North Carolina's 9th Wonder has had a wild ride en route to rap stardom. His group Little Brother were one of the first to really blow up online, using message boards and blogs to propel themselves into a record deal; that led to several excellent LB albums, production deals with Jay-Z and Destiny's Child, and eventually a GRAMMY® Award for his work with Mary J. Blige. Always down to discover and mentor new artists, he introduces his latest protégés on 9th's Opus, showcasing young blood he's signed to his new label It's A Wonderful World Music Group. As such, most of the featured voices here (with the exception of Skyzoo and the Away Team) are complete unknowns, plucked from obscurity and set loose over 9th's trademark beats loaded with lush samples, mid-tempo BPMs, and simple drums. Thee Tom Hardy shines on the relentlessly positive "Grinnin'," Big Remo does his thing on the chop-heavy "It's Real," R&B singer Heather Victoria impresses on the Bob James-sampling "I Will Always Be Down," and 9th himself takes to the mic on "1000ft."
