Details
[Edit]ABBA didn’t even begin to exhaust their long list of international chart-busters when they released ABBA Gold. The Swedish foursome’s follow-up anthology combines their biggest remaining singles with assorted rarities and alternate mixes. More ABBA Gold’s 20 tracks take in the full scope of the band’s diverse catalogue, reaching back to the group’s first album for 1973’s “Ring Ring” and extending into the ‘80s for such latter-day hits as “The Visitors” and “When All Is Said and Done.” Though many of the tunes were U.S. chart singles, songs like “Eagle,” “Angeleyes,” and “On and On and On” found their greatest success in European markets. Of special interest are tracks recorded during ABBA’s final 1982 sessions, particularly the previously unreleased “I Am the City,” a sleek and otherworldly tune reflecting the influence of techno-pop groups like Depeche Mode and OMD. A live recording of “The Way Old Friends Do” proves that the group’s magic wasn't a mere studio creation. More ABBA Gold offers a sustained rush of pure Europop pleasure that still sounds glorious 30 years after the group called it quits.
