[Edit]This enchanting release from Malian ngoni (a stringed instrument made from a gourd, resembling a lute) player Abou Diarra mixes West African sounds with blues, folk, and jazz. More of an ensemble record, Kalo Yeele is a collaboration between Diarra, French violinist Yohan Rochetta, French guitarist Nicolas Lebault, and African singers Nawassa Soumano and Demba Ndiaye N'Dillaan. At times groove-oriented and improvisatory, the album also has a strong song-based element with rich, haunting melodies that weave between cultures, continents, and styles. It's a winning mix from some top-notch musicians.
