The Houston-based quintet Adelaine solidifies its grasp of classic rock essentials on Currents, which benefits from hook-centered songwriting and forceful musicianship. Stormy Pina’s ferocity and desperation as a lead singer suggests ‘80s-era rockers like Pat Benatar, as well as contemporary belters like Amy Lee and Fireflight’s Dawn Michele. The twin-guitar attack from Wayne Davis and Donny Bayless define the band instrumentally with muscular yet melodic playing. The tracks wrestle with angst and alienation while hinting at redemption around the bend. “Two Cents,” “Bad Blood," and “Let Down” are typical of the band’s feel for driving dynamics and fist-shaking choruses. Pina fights to reclaim the freedoms of childhood in “Square One,” reaches out to a tormented friend in “Antidote,” and affirms the joy of living in “Every Once in a While.” Those hungry for a burst of guitar pyrotechnics will find “Trail Blazer” a particular high point. Currents closes with “Home,” a piano-centered track that shows off Pina’s way with an uplifting ballad. Adelaine does it all with a refreshing sincerity and lack of pretension.
