Once bandmates in Makeout Videotape with Mac DeMarco in Edmonton, Canada, Alex Calder finds his own cryptic voice on his debut full-length, 2015’s Strange Dreams. His previous EP, Time, settled for straightforward bedroom pop, but this album lives up to its title, with Calder singing through layers of lo-fi murk and dirty reverb to replicate a nocturnal state. From the first wobbling notes of “Retract,” the deliberately warped world of sound represents Calder’s comfort zone. The title track picks up the pace, but Calder clearly prefers the Jandek–meets–Pink Floyd vibe of “The Morning.”
