Hardcore Alex Chilton fans understand the mysteries of music better than most. They don’t need dry ice or laser lights to enjoy a rock ‘n’ roll show. When the power went out during Chilton’s first set of a two-gig night at New York City’s Knitting Factory one evening in 1997, fans stuck around and were treated to Chilton joining them in the audience with a borrowed acoustic guitar; this set of tunes was luckily recorded on a hand-held cassette recorder by longtime fan Jeff Vargon. The sound quality is bootleg, no matter how carefully professionally mastered. But the fun (the audience never stops laughing) of hearing Chilton struggle to remember old country songs, unexpected pop songs (The Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfer Girl," and “Solar System”), and even Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” is a moment in time worth preserving. Loudon Wainwright III’s “Motel Blues” is the one song that could be called expected, and it's performed like Chilton still had a hellhound on his trail.
