[Edit]Recorded before Rodriguez' triumphant return to Cuba, documented on Cuba Linda, this smoking and soulful set is more "roots" music than Latin jazz. The leader's rhythmic piano virtuosity is never flashy, always highly sensitive to his bandmates. Think of it as a proto-salsa jam session: the foundation is clearly Afro-Cuban voice-and-percussion rumba (thanks to the wonderful contributions of Totico and Patato), but with accompaniment of flute, trumpet and violin and a delightfully impromptu feeling.
