Though it’s not a sequel to Alice Cooper’s 1974 concept album Welcome to My Nightmare, 2008’s Along Came a Spider brings back the earlier album’s character Steven. But this album’s protagonist is a serial killer who preys on his victims with the same strategy and attack as a venomous arachnid. "Prologue/I Know Where You Live" opens with a woman’s narration providing a backstory; then Danny Saber rocks glammy guitar riffs that recall classic Alice Cooper. This album contrasts that with modern vocal production that more closely resembles the mix on 21st-century Rob Zombie recordings. Slash lends his six-string wizardry to the following “Vengeance Is Mine,” one of the most sinister-sounding songs here. And if that dark style of harmonica playing on “Wake the Dead” reminds you a bit of Black Sabbath's “The Wizard,” that could be due to the fact that it’s Ozzy Osbourne’s fangs behind the mouth-harp. KISS drummer Eric Singer plays throughout Along Came a Spider, and in fact the riff-heavy “Wrapped in Silk” rocks like an alt-metal KISS.
