In honor of Black Music Month 2021, LA mash-up DJ Amorphous, aka Jimir Reece Davis, has created a special mix. Below, he shares his thoughts on Black music and how its rich legacy comes alive in his work.
“Black music means energy. It’s something that you cannot truly express through words. It is something you feel. You can feel the history, the creativity, flowing through each and every millisecond of sound that music provides. For me, mixing different generations of Black music is essential to my identity and own listening pleasure. Thus, for this mix, I wanted to have that be a recurring theme throughout. There’s a specific point where I mix The Isley Brothers with Rihanna with dvsn; that points back to all that I grew up listening to. It’s a beautiful moment that showcases just how much Black music has evolved, in different genres, and in different varieties.”
