Details
[Edit]The Shook-Russo Quartet consists of bassist/composer Amy Shook and her husband Pat (tenor sax and composer), pianist/composer Tim Young, and drummer Frank Russo, adding special guest Greg Gisbert on trumpet. This session was recorded just after a live appearance by the five musicians in order to capture the energy of the previous evening, which they achieved. Amy contributed five of the nine compositions, including the lush ballad "Sweet Begonia" and the brisk bop vehicle "Finger Food" (a somewhat disguised reworking of the chord changes to "I Got Rhythm"). Pat's bittersweet ballad "Only Words" gets the message across without any lyrics, with heartfelt solos by its composer and the pianist. Young's cheerful "Waltz for Nanami" suggests the inevitable happiness of a young child at the dawn of a new day. All in all, this is a fine effort that demands a follow-up recording.
