[Edit]While drummer Jason Reece remained in AYWKUBTTOD's hometown of Austin, Texas, guitarist Conrad Keely relocated to Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. Then Keely returned to Austin to regroup with the current lineup, and together they set off to Hanover, Germany, to a studio once used by The Scorpions and Celtic Frost. The group was clearly recharged. Here, its progressive post-punk splinters off in many different directions without losing the band's identity. "Heart of Wires" teems with a rapturous melody. "Catatonic" charges forth with sincere aggression and guitar chords that bring out a convincing arena anthem. "Pinhole Cameras" rings with punk energy. "Up to Infinity," a song about the Syrian civil war and dedicated to the Russian punk collective Pussy Riot, takes the sound into glorious overload while managing to pull back in spots to reveal subtle shades of electric beauty. The sheer velocity of this material, driven by Reece's nuanced but brawny drum attack, is inspiring. The deluxe edition includes two bonus cuts, "Idols of Perversity" and "Mountain Battle Song," as well as videos of the band recording in the studio.
