Highly inspired by Goblin’s soundtracks for various ‘70s Dario Argento films (as well as similar sounding scores by Fabio Frizzi and Ennio Morricone), Sweden’s Anima Morte describe their music as “Vintage Italian horror music from Sweden.” Their 2011 album The Nightmare Becomes Reality opens with “Corridor of Blood,” a powerfully proggy masterpiece built on a foundation where electric guitars, bass and drums support larger-than-life sounding Hammond organs, Mellotrons and Moogs layered dynamically to pay tribute to the past while adding more innovative arrangements and a glassy, polished production. “Passage of Darkness” uses plodding rhythms to build anxiety under haunting piano notes and ominous drones, while delicately picked acoustic guitar and Mellotron woodwinds give “Solemn Graves” that classic haunted graveyard vibe. The album’s title-track downshifts using a sparser approach wherein gloomy keyboard notes dance solemnly around elongated tones before the band unleash Moog patterns that somehow manage to sound more menacing than kitschy.
