Singer Anita O'Day has been well-served by a handful of quality roundups covering both her early Krupa years and later solo work for Verve. This edition of Verve's budget Compact Jazz series brings together highlights from O'Day's prime '50s and early-'60s sides for the label. Culled from such stellar albums as Sings the Winners, Pick Yourself Up, and Sings the Most, the 16 cuts here find O'Day making fine work of Jimmy Giuffre's cool jazz classic "Four Brothers," the ever dependable "Sweet Georgia Brown," and the rare and randy "An Occasional Man." Throughout, O'Day is heard coming into her own with that signature mix of rhythmic sophistication and bop energy. The egregious disregard for her great Cole Porter disc with arranger Billy May excepted, this sampler joins both O'Day's Jazz Masters and Ultimate collections as a worthy first-disc choice for newcomers.
