[Edit]In the same vein as Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, or even the innovative post-rock band Slint, the D.C.-area guitarist Anthony Pirog straddles a fence between avant-garde jazz and brainy instrumental rock, backed by the extremely capable combo of bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Ches Smith. Things are downright pastoral on “I’m Not Coming Home,” but Pirog’s sense of texture, space, and drama are best exemplified on the dreamy “The New Electric” and the hypnotic “The Great Northern.” An impressive effort, Palo Colorado Dream should move Pirog from local treasure to a fresh new face on the national and international scenes.
