Presents Kentje'sz Beatsz

Continuing their mission to discover (or invent) the next hot genre, Planet Mu started 2011 by putting out specialty albums in specific underground styles, including cubist reggae, dark dancefloor, and juke before shifting their focus to another kinetic trend called bubble house. 18-year-old Dutch producer Anti-G spearheads the effort, using a laptop PC and a small library of Fruity Loops sounds. Essentially, all of his tracks are comprised of bassy thrusts, polyrhythmic clicks, and simple digital bleeps and bloops, set to big, swinging beats. This compilation, which was recorded between 2009 and 2010, is mechanical and cold; at times sounding like sound effects from an Atari 2600 fused with minimal house or, at other moments, like an acid version of Hot Butter’s “Popcorn.” Anti-G also pulls from dancehall (“Reggeaton Man!,” “Instrumentals Reggeaton”) and gangsta rap (“It’s Just Fresh Hip-Hop,” “Turn That Hip-Hop On”), but the best moments of Anti-G Presents Kentje’sz Beatsz are when Anti-G is at his weirdest. “CrazyShit” and “Freak It Out” find the producer working the blipped-out percolator synths into a frenzy that would become exasperating if the songs went any longer than two minutes. Ultimately, this comp isn’t clever enough to start a musical movement of its own, but it could potentially start grime fans down a new electronic avenue, and “Bubbling Cause Trouble” would be ideal for a “bubbling dance” craze, if there ever was one.
