[Edit]Pianist Pamela Hines' previous CD was an instrumental affair, but she presents nine originals (which include both her music and lyrics) to showcase singer April Hall, accompanied by veteran bassist John Lockwood and drummer Reed Dieffenbach. Hines, who studied with noted composer George Russell, writes catchy melodies in a wide variety of settings and is an accomplished player as well, while Hall's expressive vocals are interspersed throughout the songs rather than dominating them. The upbeat "I Go for You" is a driving post-bop vehicle that serves as a fine introduction. The Latin-flavored "I-95" keeps things moving, showcasing Hines' excellent chops. Lockwood's warm arco bass introduces the bittersweet ballad "A Stone," a touching piece that features Hall's best performance of the session. The only shortcoming of this CD is that Hines' lyrics frequently tend to be repetitious and not particularly memorable.
