Live From Detroit is a stunning two-disc live performance of Armenian and other traditional Middle Eastern dance music led by accomplished kanun player Ara Topouzian. For this October 1999 performance, Topouzian's band includes accomplished musicians bass guitarist Stepan Megerdichian, electric oud player Dick Barsamian, vocalist and dumbek player Jay Baronian, vocalist and guitarist Ken Kalajian, and Leon Janikian, who is often in the forefront with his virtuosic clarinet playing. Stand-out numbers from this high quality and thoroughly enjoyable release include the epic numbers "Armenian Medley" and "Armenian Medley II"; the light and upbeat "Tamzara," an Armenian traditional arranged by Topouzian; the foot-stomper "Korodig Morodig"; an unexpected cover of "Misirlou"; and "Hey Valia," a dumbek-driven showcase of the vocalists. After "Hey Valia," the tempo comes a step down for Janikian's arrangement of the Greek traditional "Tsamiko," resulting in an excellent clarinet workout, then the rollicking tempo returns with "Shek Mazerov." Actually, any song on this release is a good place to start, for Live From Detroit offers the best in modern recordings of traditional Armenian music.
