Co-led by trumpeter Armando Rodriguez and Victor Rendon (who plays drums and timbales), the Latin Jazz Orchestra was formed in 1991 but often sounds very much like a Latin big band of the 1950s. The 11-piece orchestra's only "big" name at the time of its 1992 debut was pianist Arturo O'Farrill (who was just beginning to gain some recognition). However, its repertoire (which includes "Bernie's Tune," "Here's That Rainy Day," Gato Barbieri's "Lluvia Azul," Horace Silver's "Nutville," and some newer pieces) is fresh and lively. The arrangements (by Rendon, Rodriguez, and Louis Bauzo) are colorful and the soloists are excellent. A pretty strong debut.
