[Edit]When you say “hard bop,” one of the first bands that spring to mind should be Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. The group epitomized the muscularity and sense of swing of the classic style. 1961’s Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers!!!!! features an extraordinary lineup: saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt. The album kicks off with one of the best tracks, Fuller’s “Alamode.” Blakey, Merritt, and Timmons drive the band hard as the horns sound out the catchy theme. Then Shorter, Morgan, Fuller, and Timmons spin out riveting solos. The rest of the album features excellent versions of standards. “Invitation” gets a lush treatment displaying a refined blues sensibility, while the Latin-tinged “Circus” charges ahead with great gusto. The mysterious and melancholy “You Don’t Know What Love Is” has Morgan giving a soulful and nuanced voice to the melody before breaking into his solo. “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good to You” lopes along and then picks up the pace, as horns and piano turn in succinct statements.
