[Edit]There’s a distinct pleasure in hearing a standard as originally recorded by its composer; Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers’ Moanin’ offers that experience on three classics. This 1958 masterpiece opens with the Bobby Timmons–penned title track. Now a hard-bop anthem (and an earworm in modern parlance), it contains a trio of memorable solos: a declarative statement by trumpeter Lee Morgan, a nimble outing by underrated bassist Jymie Merritt, and an authentically bluesy piano dissertation by its author. Tenor saxophonist and ace composer Benny Golson’s playfully swaying “Along Came Betty” and jaunty “Blues March” are debuted here, and his three-part “The Drum Thunder Suite” is the perfect percussive showcase for drummer and bandleader Blakey.
