The gold rush of quality indie bands coming out of Canada in the 21st century has gotten Toronto labeled as "the next Seattle." One could also compare the bountiful Arts & Crafts label to Sub Pop. This handsome compilation not only celebrates what Arts & Crafts has yielded in a decade’s time; it also plays with the cursive flow of a proper album, starting with the driving “7/4 Shoreline” by Broken Social Scene, the band of label head Kevin Drew. This may be the hardest-rocking song ever kissed by the silky voice of Leslie Feist. Zeus’ “Are You Gonna' Waste My Time?” is another standout that puts the rock back in indie, with double-cheeseburger guitar riffs seared by piping-hot leads and hard-throttled harmonies that recall Sweet’s “Fox on the Run.” Feist returns with “Mushaboom,” the sunny folk-pop single from her 2004 album Let It Die. And what better way to follow her than with "Folkloric Feel"? This building psychedelic acoustic-based jam by Apostle of Hustle sounds equally inspired by Sandy Bull’s arpeggios and Os Mutantes’ cosmopolitan weirdness.
