In the early 19th century, Polish pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) became the toast of Paris salons with brilliant miniature pieces for the piano—waltzes, preludes, mazurkas and polonaises—that were musically and technically demanding. But the songlike nocturnes (so-called “night-pieces” due to their slow, dream-like quality) endure as his most poetic and popular. Pianist Arthur Rubinstein, whose name is indelibly associated with his Polish compatriot, returned to the nocturnes several times over his 80-year career. This, his last recording of these pieces, is lauded for its tenderness, simplicity and clear-eyed lack of sentiment. In Rubinstein’s hands, the nocturnes evoke the restrained traditions of Chopin’s beloved predecessors, Mozart and Bach.
