Almost a year following the release of the much-blogged-about five-song EP Back from Earth, AWOLNATION (a.k.a. Aaron Bruno) delivered his first studio album Megalithic Symphony. Bruno’s 2010 EP revealed a refusal to stay put in one genre and this carries over into his full-length release. “Soul Wars” sets the tone with angst-ridden vocals that rip apart the song’s catchy melody. Bruno sings about his family’s dysfunction on the techno-tinged “People” before waxing a Robin Hood-inspired manifesto on “Jump On My Shoulders” which plays a little like Midnite Vultures-era Beck with its falsetto melodies sung over mechanical beats. Of the three tunes culled from his prior EP, “Burn It Down” exudes the most energy (especially with those Little Richard-inspired yelps) while the mellower “Sail” plays with more clever radio-pop innovations.
