Azure McCall will be a new name to most readers/listeners, but she is a very fine veteran vocalist. Her obscurity is due to being based in Hawaii for over 20 years. McCall has a soulful delivery, an in-tune voice that is attractive, and a versatile but always swinging style. On the Gift set there are only three jazz standards, but McCall finds beauty and feeling in each of the newer songs, four by her longtime pianist Tennyson Stephens. The accompanying group has several familiar names and an excellent saxophonist in Larry Klimas, all of whom do a fine job of supporting the talented singer. This CD is well worth exploring.
