2011’s Snake People could easily fool listeners into thinking it’s a long-lost recording from the late ‘70s or early ‘80s featuring members of Einstürzende Neubauten and Bauhaus. The opening song, “Legs Control,” plays like goth-tinged post-punk as Tyler Morris’ distant vocals sound secondary to Chaz Patranella’s distorted synthesizers and Brian Harrison’s doomy bass rumbles. “Wrong Side of the Bars” echoes Public Image Ltd.’s spooky dub-dappled punk, sounding as if Balaclavas picked up where its 2010 debut album, Roman Holiday, left off. The static textured guitars of “Sh*t Meridian” bring a Killing Joke approach to a simplified mantra of hypnotic beats riffing on early Can recordings. As with the opening track, Morris uses his voice as a unique instrument rather than sweating under the dim spotlight of a darkened song. The title track spans nearly 10 minutes as it fuses avant-dub with a Warholian soundtrack.
