Scotland's Battlefield Band puts a contemporary spin on traditional Scottish/Celtic music on the varied and enjoyable New Spring. Obviously quite knowledgeable of Celtic musical traditions but not really of a purist mindset, the foursome successfully unites electric keyboards with bagpipes, fiddles, whistles and other acoustic instruments. Sometimes instrumental and sometimes not, the CD ranges from arrangements of traditional Celtic pieces like "The Highland Man Kissed His Grannie," "Calum Fhionnlaigh" and "The Golden Eagle" to charming songs by vocalist/leader Alan Reid such as "The Green And The Blue" and "Darien." For Celtic music aficionados who don't necessarily consider themselves purists, New Spring is highly recommended.
