[Edit]Singer/songwriter Matt Drenik relocated from Austin, Texas to Portland, Ore., leaving his band Lions behind and finding new success with Battleme when his song “Lights,” cowritten with the Forest Rangers, became a musical highlight on the FX show Sons of Anarchy. (Another song, “Burn This Town” was featured as the finale of season two.) For Future Runs Magnetic, Drenik teamed up with Portland natives Eric Johnston (bass), Zach Richards (drums), Evan Railton (synths), and producer Doug Boehm (Girls, Dr. Dog, Guided by Voices) to fully represent his latest batch of tunes. These include several of his finest pop songs to date, including the leadoff track “Just Weight,” “Nights on the Strand," and the extended “We Get Out,” where the guitars feed back for a cathartic end. The band chemistry brings true blood to the electricity of “We Are Underground” and a pulsing excitement to the dynamic “I Want My Kim Deal,” a clear reference to the Pixies/Breeders musician. “I Am a Lightning Bolt” centers on Drenik’s earnest vocals with an under-two-minute tune that would do Guided By Voices proud.
