Dutch retro group Bauer is stuck in a time warp. Which decade or place they've transported to, it's tough to tell. The group blends '60s and '70s pop styles of artists like the Carpenters and Burt Bacharach and blends them into a weird concoction distinctly their own. Most of the tracks of the album, such as "The Klondike Valley," are filled with bubbly synthesizers and playful, nonsensical lyrics. Too often, retro groups rely too heavily on one style and the joke wears thin quickly. With their imaginative blending of styles, Bauer has elevated above the level of ironic camp and evolved into distinct artists.
