Details
[Edit]On Teen Dream this Baltimore duo realizes its expansive folk-pop vision to an even greater degree than on 2008’s fine Devotion. In tandem with producer Chris Coady, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally build upon minimal melodies and elliptical lyrics to create intricate textures that unfold over the course of each track. Legrand’s vocals range from languid to enraptured, though at times (notably on “Silver Soul”) she can sound surprisingly gutsy. The guitar and keyboard embroidery within “Take Care” and “Better Times” shimmer like gold thread against black velvet. The duo brings a symphonic quality to these tracks — “Zebra” and “10 Mile Stereo” swell with mounting emotion to intoxicating effect. Teen Dream is often ethereal, yet underpinned by visceral feeling and solid songcraft. The inescapable beat and sharp hooks found in “Lover of Mine” should dispel any notion that Legrand and Scally’s music is for exclusive consumption only. This is exalted, transporting music that reaches high and succeeds admirably.
