Details
[Edit]I Love You, It’s Cool builds on the breakthroughs from the Brooklyn-based trio’s Beast Rest Forth Mouth album by skewing the tracks toward propulsive beats and insinuating synth hooks. Krautrock-inspired spaciness and shoegazer miasma remain part of the band’s textural essence, along with a lyric sensibility that merges the exalted with the eerie. Within the billowing oscillations of tracks like “Sinful Nature” and “Space Remains” is an unexpected interplay of tension and drama, recalling ‘90s neo-psych bands like The Stone Roses and The Charlatans. Jon Philpot’s distantly yearning vocals capture an unearthly elegance in “The Reflection of You", “Kiss Me Crazy", and similar excursions into sci-fi romanticism. Bear in Heaven brings the journey to a placid conclusion with “Sweetness & Sickness”, matching a bongo-like percussion line to ghostly keyboard flutters and furtively inviting vocals. I Love You, It’s Cool works well both as a sustained aural atmosphere and a series of mysterious yet assertive tracks that flirt with the pop mainstream without surrendering to it.
