[Edit]Wired magazine named composer Bear McCreary one of "television’s five secret weapons" for his innovative music-scoring alchemy, and his work on Starz’ historical adventure-fantasy series ably shows why. In the first season, McCreary introduced "about a dozen character themes, set in a soundscape built from both Renaissance and contemporary instrumentation.” By way of contrast, the composer notes: “Season one was ambitious but manageable. Season two was merciless. There was no easing into the music this time around; virtually every scene is comprised of thematic variations for the characters within that scene. This traditionally operatic approach was taken to new extremes this season.” The second season’s globetrotting narrative also inspired McCreary to expand the soundtrack’s musical influences and instrumental palette, incorporating such disparate elements as Naples period music, pre-Columbian Peruvian vocal chants, and Middle Eastern percussion and woodwinds.
