The 1997 debut release by Canadian pop band B'ehl (out of Winnipeg, Manitoba) was entitled Only a Paper Moon, and was released by Winnipeg label Endearing Records. The collection was produced by John Sutton at Winnipeg's Private Ear Recording Studio. The disc features the original lineup of Melanie Barnes and Allison Shevernoha on guitars and vocals, bassist Bob Somers and drummer Dan McCafferty. The band's playfulness and kid-like appeal is instantly evident with the first song, "Tag". The song is also the first example of the harmonious mixture of the voices of Barnes and Shevernoha. The band's brand of rollicking indie pop is similar to fellow Canadians Plumtree, as evident on songs like "Fiver", "Swim By" and "My Everydays". The tempos slow down on songs like "Still of Use" and "Channel". These softer songs are reminiscent of the Softies. Keyboards make an appearance on "Not Quite Ready". Throughout, the band displays a confident style of twee pop, with the harmonies by Barnes and Shevernoha leading the way.
