The fifth and final of the two-CD Bessie Smith sets wraps up the complete reissuance of the Empress of the Blues' recordings. Music from her final two sessions (including the well-known "Gimme a Pigfoot") date from 1931 and 1933, there are five alternate takes from 1925 and 1927 which, although rare, are not previously unreleased as it states, and there is the soundtrack from Smith's one film, 1929's St. Louis Blues. The second disc is quite a bit different, for Ruby Smith (Bessie's niece) is heard in the early '70s reminiscing to Chris Albertson about life with the blues singer. The stories are R rated and quite spicy and sometimes almost unbelievable, dealing more with Bessie Smith's sex life and drinking than her singing, but they are certainly fun to hear!
