[Edit]Chain Letters is the second release by the married duo of Christopher Senseney (guitar, vocals, keyboards) and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney (bass, backing vocals). Their debut, White Hat, was impressive. This one's even better. Louder and grittier than Big Harp's more intimate first album, Chain Letters brings fuzz bass, John Voris' propulsive drumming, and dirty electric guitar to “You Can’t Save ‘Em All” and the soulful standout “Good News.” They do revisit their spare sound with the moving acoustic guitar and piano ballad “Bar All the Doors,” featuring gorgeous harmonies. But most of the album is richly textured and dark, like the driving “No Trouble at All” and the dynamite closer “Call Out the Cavalry, Strike Up the Band,” with its barrelhouse groove. Senseney has a deep, expressive voice and a fluid delivery that breathes life into his sharp character sketches and vivid lyrics. Punchy and raw, Chain Letters is a brilliant expansion of Big Harp’s sound.
