Details
[Edit]White Hat is the debut by Big Harp, the married duo of Christopher Senseney (guitar, vocals, keyboards) and bassist Stefanie Drootin-Senseney (formerly of The Good Life). The duo’s sound is an Americana mashup of honky-tonk piano, finger-picked acoustic guitar, and bluesy electric licks backed by the steady drumming of Squirrel Nut Zippers’ Chris Phillips. Senseney’s deep drawl and deadpan delivery has a soothing presence, and Drootin adds some tasteful harmonies, although she sings too infrequently considering how well their voices sound together. They mix up the tempos with a blend of countrified front-porch strummers (“Goodbye Crazy City,” “Steady Hand Behind the Wheel,” the title track), blue-eyed soul (“Here’s Hoping,” “Let Me Lend My Shoulder”), a touching ballad (“Oh Nadine”), and a catchy Latin-tinged shuffle (“Out in the Field”), all performed with style and laid-back charm. White Hat is a notable first effort that’s easy to fall for.
