Details
[Edit]Admittedly in a nostalgic mood while celebrating 25 years together, Robert Williams (a.k.a. Big Sandy) and his group thought about doing an acoustic record. They’d played shows where the power had gone out and found it brought out a different side of the band, changing some material for the best and at least into something else worth hearing. That’s exactly what happens with this album of Big Sandy’s favorites (more like obscurities in many cases). The band finds a reggae groove for the previously doo-wopped “Baby Baby Me” right at the start. “Missouri Gal,” which appeared on their 1992 debut, brings an honest power to the tune, showing off what a great band with a first-rate rhythm section can do with less. “Don’t Desert Me” strips down to a lonesome dance between vocalist and bassist Jeff West. “Nothing to Lose” transforms from a honky-tonk tune to a Tex-Mex ballad where the story of a wife with an abusive husband becomes even more ominous.
