[Edit]For anyone who wants to get to know Big Star, it will always be advisable to simply seek out the three albums they recorded the first time around: #1 Record, Radio City, and Third/Sister Lovers. Everything else is gravy, really. This collection is more of an alternate set for seasoned fans. Due to licensing issues, only three songs from the first two albums appear here in their studio versions, with two songs from the third making the cut. “September Gurls” is here with a studio rehearsal. Seven tracks are from the 1993 reunion album Columbia: Live at Missouri University 4/25/93, with members of The Posies serving as the backing band for Alex Chilton and drummer Jody Stephens. The closing track, “A Whole New Thing,” is from the band’s 2005 album In Space, again with Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies backing up Chilton and Stephens. The music here is excellent. It's not, however, a true career summary.
