[Edit]Pianist Bill Gerhardt's fourth Steeplechase CD is a continuation of a solo piano session from October 2007, the other half of which can be found on All That I Have. This marathon record date proved extremely fruitful for the pianist, who plays eight originals and one familiar jazz composition on this release. His introspective "Daughter" (dedicated to his adult stepdaughter) has the air of Bill Evans and many of the pianists he influenced. "Sleet" is a melancholy ballad conveying a lonely feeling, while another ballad, "Emerald," suggests a stroll in the country on a crisp spring day. The late Gary McFarland's moving "Gary's Waltz" was recorded a number of times by pianist Evans late in his career, but Gerhardt manages to maintain its bittersweet air while also putting his personal stamp upon it. Recommended.
