Details
[Edit]Certainly, this is a priceless collection of Lady Day's recordings from the mid-'40s, and though it can't be comprehensive, it does make for a good companion piece to the first volume. What makes it unusual is that, of the 16 selections, nine are alternate takes. The discriminating listener will have to judge whether they are better than the first-take masters. Why they were chosen and emphasized is curious. Does this make them more precious because they are rare or not commonly heard? This is Billie, and that makes Priceless Jazz: More Billie Holiday special, but other compilations, original packages, and straight releases of complete chronological works are likely more interesting, especially to devotees. ~ Michael G.
