There was a time when the chief lyrical topics of heavy metal were either partying or El Diablo, but during the early 21st century metal has increasingly become synonymous with anger. A case in point is the 2007 release by Autumn Black, Beneath the Shadows. Singer Andrew Vargas follows the same path as countless other modern-day metal singers: he's more of a hardcore barker/screamer who's prone to melodic crooning from time to time, as especially evidenced by the title track. Vargas' bandmates are well versed in crushing metal, however, as they have no problem laying down the thrash and grind on such ditties as "Ashes" and "Remembrance." Autumn Black like to describe their sound as a merger of East Coast metal and West Coast hardcore. After giving Beneath the Shadows a spin, you'd probably say that sounds just about right.
