Details
[Edit]At a time when metal was fragmenting into a diverse array of subgenres, Zakk Wylde assumed a role as a figurehead and synthesizer for the scene. Stronger Than Death isn't a genre piece as much as an ode to hard rock authenticity in all forms. After playing Ozzy Osbourne’s right-hand man for eight years, Wylde undoubtedly earned his credentials; many of the best moments on Stronger Than Death display Ozzy’s influence. The album also bears the influence of more recent metal innovators like Alice in Chains, Pantera, and Kyuss. Wylde wants to reclaim the majesty and grit of '70s hard rock without simply aping the classics. He wants the heart of The Allman Brothers and the body of Slayer. Though his bluesy moan dominates every song, his guitar work is the album’s undeniable focal point. Even when his riffs feel derived from the great blues-metal and thrash of the past, Wylde invests his riffs with an extra bolt of electricity that makes them shocking and volatile.
