Bootlegged from almost the first hour there were rock bootleggers, Bob Dylan's 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert (actually recorded in Manchester on the same tour) was a legendary performance for three decades before seeing official release in 1998. The first half offers solo acoustic versions of some of Dylan's knottiest new tunes, while the second set with the Hawks (later the Band) roars like hounds chasing the electric rabbit. Dylan's singing is at its most confident and strange, peculiarly suited for straightforward declarations like "I'm your friend" ("Tell Me Mama") and the surreal border saga "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues." The most famous moment, of course, is when some hapless audience member equates the Jewish Dylan with the man who betrayed Christ after which the singer leaves the heckler stranded with "Like a Rolling Stone."
