Recorded at Detroit’s Cobo Hall in front of a rabid hometown crowd, Live Bullet is one of rock ‘n’ roll’s finest live albums. Seger had come into his own and was wowing the mainstream rock audiences, after years of knocking out the local crowds. The Silver Bullet Band are simply on fire and together with Seger they do it all. “Nutbush City Limits” and “Travelin’ Man” kick things off in overdrive, but even a mid-tempo such as “Beautiful Loser” is given an ambitious, lights-out rendition, with Seger injecting sizable emotion into every line and opening the tune up like the heir apparent to Van Morrison, whose “I’ve Been Working” is given a fiery Detroit interpretation. Classic old-time rock ‘n’ roll tracks like “Bo Diddley” and Chuck Berry’s “Let It Rock” are given extra voltage. The R&B classic “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” is right in Seger’s sweet spot. But it’s his own classics — “Turn the Page,” “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” “Kathmandu” — that solidified his hold on ‘70s rock radio.
