Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and tenor saxophonist Harold Land co-led important quintets from 1967 to 1971. Released in 1968, Total Eclipse was Hutcherson’s first Blue Note album to feature Land (a fellow Southern Californian), along with pianist Chick Corea (on loan from Miles Davis’ quintet), double bassist Reggie Johnson, and drummer Joe Chambers. The band gigged for three weeks in Manhattan before recording, and its cohesiveness can be heard as Hutcherson and Land crisply play in the theme to the opener, “Herzog.” Corea’s “Matrix” is the sole non-Hutcherson original and was heard in trio form on his landmark Now He Sobs, Now He Sings (also released in 1968). The fanciful waltz “Pompeian” concludes Total Eclipse with Land switching to flute and Hutcherson doubling on bells.
