Details
[Edit]Bobby Sherwood had a very interesting big band in the mid-1940s, but because it was the tail end of the swing era, it is often overlooked. Sherwood, a fine trumpeter who was originally a guitarist and took occasional vocals, is heard on this CD performing 18 numbers originally made as radio transcriptions. Three versions of his big band are heard, and although a few of the sidemen became known a bit more (trumpeter Bob Higgins, Dave Pell, heard here on alto, tenorman Herbie Haymer, and trombonist Skip Layton), their contributions are less significant than those of Sherwood and the ensembles in general. Various vocalists are featured on seven of the selections, including Gale Landis, Francis Glenn, Jay Johnson and the Skylarks. Despite the time period, the influence of bop is not felt at all. Highlights include swinging versions of "There's Good Blues Tonight," "King Cotton" and "In a Mellow Tone," plus a feature for the English horn of Eddie Lucas on "Cape Horn."
