Details
[Edit]A trumpeter's delight, this recording features three leading modern mainstream trumpet players in an old fashioned jam. Vincent DiMartino, Allen Vizutti, and Bobby Shew may be a bit slick for some tastes, but there is no denying their technical virtuosity. What makes this stand out from the crowd is the visceral excitement that erupts as these three run through such gems as "It's Only a Paper Moon," and "All the Things You Are." The latter is brought to modern life by the wonderfully creative arranging of John Harmon, who also redesigned "Moonglow." The recording captures the soloists live, backed by a more-than-adequate brass and rhythm section. While Sam Pilafian gets a few tasty shots on tuba, and Luke Gillespie shows his chops on piano, it is the trumpet trio that steals the show, with crowd-pleasing acrobatics and even some beautiful ballad work (on, for example, "Laura Joy"). ~ Steven A.
